Mountaineers, as an analogy, have a very real and obvious goal, where sometimes uncertain hazards and difficulties lurk awaiting each attempt to get to the top – the ultimate goal - often requiring a significant amount of planning and subsequent effort to overcome. To finally reach the summit of a mountain peak is to grasp the real understanding of achievement when, through sheer hard won effort and sweat - and sometimes blood and tears - in that very special moment, with fast beating heart and weary legs, you attain the ‘roof of the world’. The thrill, enjoyment, pleasure and sheer ecstatic moment when the view extends to 360’ you suddenly realise why you began the journey so far below. You now understand so completely you didn’t even need to ask the question why? Only those who both aspire to and reach the pinnacle of success and achievement will understand with you. Learning IS like climbing a mountain, it is often a long and difficult journey, sometimes painful and seemingly just too hard! But in the analogy alluded to earlier, while the moment of completion is such a powerful magnet, one should not forget the journey itself is where the real learning happens. It is overcoming each of those seemingly impossible obstacles along the way that count, where each one is added to an account of positive knowledge, understanding and experience, until the last few feet when all is done and the ‘summit’ gained. This is the measure of true success.
